Tokyo, Japan, has once again launched a demonstration project for perovskite solar cell garden lights

Recently, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government installed 39 new garden lights using perovskite solar cells in Odaiba Marine Park (Minato Ward, Tokyo) and 2 in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. It is expected that thin-film versions of the same type of cells will be installed at the Harumi Cruise Terminal in the summer of 2026, with a total installed capacity of approximately 50 kW (currently the largest in Japan), aiming to accelerate the demonstration and application process of these solar cells.

Previously, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government installed 35 garden lights at the Tokyo Dome City Stadium in August 2025 and conducted empirical testing until December of the same year. In this new empirical test, improved garden lights were used, with their battery life extended from the original maximum of 8 hours to 14 hours.

Based on the confirmed results from previous empirical tests that a certain amount of electricity can be generated even on cloudy or overcast days, it was decided to conduct another verification in the Dohi Building, which is located between tall buildings and difficult to be illuminated by sunlight, due to its poor lighting conditions. The installation of garden lights in Odaiba Seaside Park is aimed at ensuring nighttime lighting and promoting decarbonization, and will be verified in collaboration with Ricoh Company.

The installation project for the Harumi Passenger Ferry Terminal is set to commence around the summer of 2026, and is being jointly promoted by Sekisui Solar Film Company (located in Kita Ward, Osaka) and Kyocera Communication Systems Company (located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto).
